Carnival on Long Street

About the Carnival

The Atherstone Carnival was re-launched by The Atherstone Youth Marching Band on Sunday September 25th, 2005 as Party In The Park.

It consisted of the Band and one vehicle (from Aldi). Our plan was to ensure that we could get a large vehicle along Long Street the wrong way and negotiate the corners since Long Street had seen many changes over the past 10 or say years with widening of the pavements and bollards on corners.

Glad to say it went well.

At 6pm, as we were packing away, it rained !

2006 saw the carnival increase in size and was moved to July 22nd and saw Long Street packed with people. See the photo's.

Oh, it started to rain at about 3:00pm

2007 saw the formation of the Atherstone Community Carnival. This was formed in order to move the responsibility of running the Carnival away from the band, and more importantly, move the financial responsibility away from the band.

On 21st July at 6:00am, following a night of torrential rain, it was decided to postpone the event. We had alternative areas set up for the field events, but by now the Royal Meadow drive area was waterlogged so the event took place on Sunday, 2nd September.

The 2008 carnival took place on Saturday 10th May. While early in the year, and predictably cooler than a July date, the event ran to schedule. With about 8 floats, live music and a fun fair.
